A Bit About Romsey Town
Following the Enclosure Acts of the 1800s, which dismantled the open fields around the town, the small strips of land were re-assembled and many were sold for housing. This became Romsey Town. Most of the houses were built between 1885 and 1895 with the street pattern following the old field boundaries. It was the era of high Empire, reflected in names such as the Jubilee and the Empress, and in street names – Malta, Cyprus, Suez, and Hobart.
The railway divided Romsey Town from the city and provided the largest employer for the area. Today, Romsey Town is one of the most cosmopolitan areas of the city and boasts a wealth of independent shops, cafes and restaurants – and, of course, the city’s best pub!
